Wd external hard drive keeps disconnecting
HI
I have an ImacMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019) with Catalina
2 months ago I purchased a WD 5TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 External Hard Drive --
Over the last several weeks, ever so often I noticed files disappear and I have to connect it again and it works ok for a bit
I am using this in conjuction with lightroom and notice the problem when in lightroom it says files may be damaged, the issue was they were not showing up on my hard drive until I disconnected and reconnected it
I have had other WD hard drives and never encountered this problem
I would appreciate if anyone would know how I can fix this
I went to energy saver and unchecked prevent computer from sleeping automatically,
put hard disks asleep whenever possible, enable power nap
Any help I would greatly appreciate

You want to check "Prevent computer from sleeping" and uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep" and uncheck "Enable Power Nap".
You might want to download the Western Digital drive utility and make sure that the drives don't sleep by themselves.

Usually the disconnect seems to happen every couple days
Will report back next week if all is well

I had that problem every couple of days as well. It was not only annoying, but also eventually caused file corruption. This was particularly bad because I was not only having problems with my system disk, but also problems with my backup drives as well.
Ultimately, after doing a lot of other things too, my Mac finally stabilized after upgrading to Big Sur.
Will report back next week if all is well

Nothing seems to work
After trying everything previous mentioned still same issue of folders going away and having to disconnect the hard drive again for them to show up
Anyone use a thunderbolt cable?

I use 3 Ext HD's - had this issue awhile ago - I disconnected everything from my iMac, did a PRAM & SMC reset/clear.. After reconnecting everything, I did First Aid in Disk Utility on ALL my HD's.. Rebooted and all was well.. It could also be that the external hd is giving a warning that it's about to die.. Check your Power Settings, these sometimes change (no idea why) - L
